A man's skin is much different from that of a woman's. It contains larger pores, whiskers, more collagen and elastin (fibrous proteins that help hold everything together), a denser supply of blood vessels, and it produces more sweat. Put all these factors together and a guy's face attracts a large amount of oil and dirt.

Exfoliation is like a mild shedding process that unclogs pores, keeps skin clean and helps reduce acne breakouts. It should be the first step used in cleaning your face.  Exfoliation is usually followed by washing your face with soap (preferably one with hypoallergenic properties and one that does not contain toxins) and finally, moisturizing with a safe non-toxic moisturizer. (See our suggestions below for good product choices.)

Unfortunately, many men wash exclusively with plain old bar soap that was probably purchased at the store along with their groceries. Although, it's certainly enough to keep you clean, it's not the best choice to keep your skin healthy. Bar soaps tend to dry out your skin and  sometimes the ingredients can actually clog pores which lead to rougher skin in the long run.

Exfoliation has yet another major benefit.  It helps expose the face's hair follicles allowing for a better shave. And, we all know that a smoother shave is practically the Holy Grail of a man's morning grooming routine.
